Once you and your partner are officially newlyweds, the real celebration can begin! With the cocktail reception typically kicking off the festivities. This part of the day, lasting around an hour or two, transitions your wedding from a formal ceremony into a lively event. It provides a relaxed, enjoyable space for guests to savour refreshments and mingle before the reception starts.

The cocktail reception sets a celebratory tone, however it’s also essential from a logistical perspective. It gives our wedding team time to prepare for your reception dinner and allows you to take additional photos with your spouse, family, or wedding party.

As the cocktail reception is a key part of the day, it’s natural to want it to be unforgettable. We’ve compiled the best tips and tricks to help you plan the perfect wedding cocktail reception, ensuring it’s both enjoyable and memorable for your guests.

What is a cocktail reception?

A cocktail reception is the time between the ceremony and reception where guests can socialise, enjoy drinks, and savour appetisers. This part of the wedding day creates a relaxed atmosphere, giving guests the freedom to grab refreshments, chat, admire the décor, take photos, or explore the venue. Most cocktail receptions also feature entertainment, like live music such as a saxophonist, guitarist, live singer or a combination of them, enhancing the  mood while the couple takes additional photos and the dinner preparations are finalised.

When does the cocktail reception happen?

Traditionally the cocktail reception follows directly after the wedding ceremony and before the wedding reception. Whilst there’s no set rule for this and can also occur pre-ceremony, this itself can pose a few additional challenges including getting guests seated for the ceremony. Scheduling your cocktail reception post-ceremony and pre-reception also allows any wedding reception only guests to arrive and mingle with you and your other guests before being seated for dinner.

How long does the cocktail reception take?

Typically, your cocktail reception will last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the time of your ceremony, number of guests and formal photos required and also giving our team plenty of time to prepare your wedding  reception whilst allowing you enough down time post-ceremony to relax and mingle with your guests.

Who attends the cocktail reception?

Whilst all of your ceremony guests will attend your cocktail reception, your attendance isn’t mandatory. Your photographer will want to whisk you away for some of this time for some couple shots and possibly with your wedding parties accompanying you too.

What do you serve during a cocktail reception?

One of the most important aspects of the cocktail reception is the cocktail! Well this doesn’t have to be a cocktail but refreshments are key. You’ll want to give your guests multiple options. Wine, beer and spirits are all the standard choices, however you can also serve a signature cocktail, special drinks (such as your own personalised drink, perhaps a drink you both love or a unique creation). It’s also a good idea to provide the option of a non alcoholic beverage for younger guests or any guests who prefer to abstain from drinking.

Appetisers play an important role during the cocktail reception. Consider offering light bites and canapés, which can be served by waitstaff circulating trays throughout the event. This keeps guests energised and satisfied while they enjoy their drinks and mingle.

Other key aspects of the cocktail reception you may wish to consider:

Seating: While most of your guests will likely be standing during the cocktail hour, at our Adonis Gardens venue, where many cocktail receptions take place, cushioned lounge seating and high tables are available. These provide a comfortable option for guests who may not be able to stand for extended periods.

Music: A cocktail reception is meant for mingling and conversation, so it’s best to avoid overpowering music. Instead, choose more subtle options like a string quartet, strolling saxophonist or violinist, a solo performer, or a curated playlist at a lower volume. If you prefer a livelier performance, such as a band, limit it to 30 to 60 minutes, allowing the rest of the time for guests to socialise comfortably.

Decor: Your cocktail reception venue is a high-traffic area and still a significant part of your day, so take advantage of the opportunity for beautiful decor. Consider adding statement floral arrangements, a seating plan display, and stylish signage for food or signature drinks to enhance the space.

Entertaining: Engage and entertain your guests with an activity for them all to participate in. Whether it’s something for your little guests too such as garden games or a selfie station, or signing your guest book to give your guests something to do beyond eating and drinking.
